All Out For 60…!

Thanks, Sydney Morning Herald, for that photo! Did that just happen? Did the Australian Cricket Team just get all out for 60, and in only 111 deliveries…? They’d have stayed in longer if they just left the ball completely – only 8 of them were on wicket! @rameshsrivats captured the event quite brilliantly with the following Tweet: Where can they possibly go from here? Up is the answer. If you’ve

The Australian Ireland Fund – Xmas in July

Driftwood Group was delighted to sponsor the Christmas in July event for the Ireland Fund on the 23rd. It was a great night for a variety of charitable causes in both Ireland and Australia. We were greeted with mulled wine, live music and a beautiful venue at the Republic Bar. There were lots of fun Xmas jumpers and delicious platters of food. It was lovely to meet a wide network

Once in a Blue Moon

In most calendar years, our little blue planet’s denizens get to look up into the night sky and see a beautiful full moon 12 times – that is, once a month. However, the lunar month doesn’t quite match up to our rigid structure of calendar months. We humans like to define everything in a way that often suits us, but more often than not doesn’t suit others, or in this

Musings On Moving

I moved house last week. T-O-T-A-L nightmare! Live in house Decide to move to new house Buy boxes & pack stuff in them Move boxes Unpack boxes Recycle boxes Live in house…   And what’s more, I’ve moved house quite a lot in my time. I reckon either I must really, really like change, or else I must really, really like boxes. But this time, something struck me…. While you’re

What’s All This About ‘Cloud?’

I’m not that old. At least, I don’t think of myself as old. But I learnt to type on a lever Typewriter! Remember the Margin Release key? The machine I had was said to be portable, but that was only because you had a car boot handy to put it in. I had a Sinclair ZX81, followed by second-hand Apple 2+. I remember programming Pong in Basic, just to prove

6.25 Seconds Per Resume…!?

Earlier this week a candidate asked me how long I spend looking at an applicant’s resume. This launched me into my most polished rant about how there is a general conception that recruiters spend almost no time at all actually READING the resume you send them. Apparently we all just scan the document for keywords, and have a very cursory review of gaps, dates, longevity and education. We’re going back

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary…What Type of Garden is your Business?

A good friend of mine once suggested a new (and somewhat profound) business idea. It went roughly as follows: 1 – Take busy executives out of their office or boardroom environment 2 – Put them into the back of a van, conveniently stocked with all the ‘fineries’ 3 – Give them a change of clothes & safety gear so they don’t spoil their suit 4 – Drive them out to

The War on “Talent”

When I was a kid, the first time you encountered the word TALENT was usually in music class, or maybe on the sports field… “How talented little Jessica is on the piano, she’s a natural” “Look at those basketball skills. What a Talent!” But cut to 2015 and the word Talent is bandied about with great enthusiasm. A quick run through the Googlizer produces about half a billion results for
